Book Review - Wild Child by Mike Wells

Wild Child is a book that I couldn’t put down for a couple of reasons. One, there’s a government conspiracy in it and two, there’s a mysterious cave filled with green healing water. It’s a fast-paced novel that keeps you interested right from the beginning. I think it took me all of two days to finish it.
“Don’t do it Kyle. Don’t drink one drop of that stuff. And don’t let it touch you!”
Enter characters Briana and Kyle who are friends but have that energy of two lovers on the brink of discovering they could be lovers. One night they find themselves on a lake when Briana challenges Kyle to race across the lake. Against his better judgment, Kyle agrees and Briana is horribly injured. She manages to swim to an unknown cave, despite her injuries and finds that it has healing properties. The only problem is, once Briana leaves the cave to return home her injuries return, which means her eventual death. Kyle must figure out a way that he can keep his best friend alive. Add in some government agents who want to use Briana as a human experiment and we have a roller coaster ride of intrigue.
The book is great! Mike Wells knows how to write thrillers and how to keep a reader engaged throughout the story. I enjoyed it until the end and look forward to reading the second book so that I can learn if Briana is still alive and why the healing properties don’t last beyond the cave. The characters were easy to relate to and you were really rooting for Briana to live throughout the book. There was a real connection between the two characters and you can’t help but hope that they end up together.
“Something about the way the hand felt told Kyle that it had spent much of its life guiding people into small rooms.”
I give the book a five-star rating for the original idea and the gripping read. I look forward to dabbling in more of Well’s books. If you like books with intrigue and involve mysterious contagion, good or bad, then you won’t want to miss out on this read. It’s a short novel, so it makes it perfect for an easy beach read.
