When Your Prince Turns into a Monster

Dating can be exciting, a whirlwind experience that can send you into a world of blissful happiness, That’s what dating someone new can feel like. It can go the other way as well, however, and instead, send you into a depression. Have you ever dated someone that turned into someone that you didn’t recognize?

You wouldn’t be the only one. I’ve dated both types of men, and scarily enough, they always start out the same so it makes it really hard to tell which one is a genuine Prince and which is the Prince in sheep’s clothing. Both a Monster and a Prince will treat you like a queen at first, wooing you with attention and making you feel as if you are the most important person in the world to them. With both, you will feel like you finally met the one, your soul mate and you will thank your lucky stars every day that you finally met him.

It’s only after a certain period of time that you start to see the difference between the two. The Prince will, of course, continue to love and adore you in all the ways that you deserve while the monster will start to pull back the attention that you’re used to. A Monster will wait until you are attached to him, and maybe even love him before he will pull away from you because then it makes it so much harder for you to walk away from him. When he does pull away it will feel like your heart is ripping in two and you will search frantically for a reason why it’s happening but you won’t find the answer.

A Monster is usually a narcissistic person who only thinks of himself and he will start to berate you and make you feel inferior to him. You will start to believe him because you love him and you will assume that’s why all the attention went away. It’s a cruel game that these men play but they are masters at it because they have played the game many times before.

I, unfortunately, have dated men like this which is hard for me to admit because I’ve always prided myself on being a strong woman. A badass survivor, that takes no crap from anyone. But we all make mistakes and sometimes we can’t help who we fall in love with. My biggest flaw is that I always saw the best in people, even the monsters, and I often wait a long time before I leave because I believe there is some good there. It’s such a disappointment when I realized the good that I saw is not enough to make this person a better man. So, I leave because I know that I deserve better but still there are some scars.

I write many stories about love in You Taste Like Whiskey and Sunshine, some are bad while others are wonderful. I like telling these stories because not only have they made me the woman I am today but they give me the opportunity to help others who have gone through the same things that I have. I’m a different woman these days, I tread carefully in the dating world but I’m still a firm believer that my Prince is out there.
